1. Getting started
What you need
- To scan a room: an iPhone or iPad with a LiDAR Scanner: iPhone 12 Pro or a later Pro model, or iPad Pro (2020) or later, running iOS or iPadOS 26 or later. On a device without one, the scan button is turned off.
- Everything else, from correcting a room to adding and arranging furniture, works offline on the device that scanned the room. Opening a room on another device will come with backup and sync, which is not available yet.
The basic steps
- Scan a room and give it a name. It is saved as a space.
- Correct any wall, door or window the scan got wrong.
- Add your things from a photo or a store's product page, with their exact size.
- Drag them into place, or let the app arrange them for a goal.
- Save the arrangements you like, and share the plan.
Your spaces are listed on the first screen. Tap one to open it. To rename or delete a space, touch and hold it, or swipe it to the left to delete.
2. Scanning a room
- Tap Scan a room.
- Stand near the middle of the room and turn slowly, pointing the camera at each wall in turn. An outline of walls, doors and windows builds up as you go. Follow any prompts on screen, such as moving closer or slowing down.
- In a large or L-shaped room, or one with tall furniture against the walls, take a few steps as well as turning, so every wall is seen.
- Tap Done, then name the space.
The app builds the room in a few seconds: squared-up walls, doors, windows, open doorways and the ceiling. While you scanned, it also kept a few camera frames, which it uses to work out each wall's color, the baseboard, the floor's color and likely material, the ceiling, and the light. Sloped ceilings, as in a bonus room under the roof, are read from the scan too.
For the best scan
- Scan in daylight with the lights on. Colors come out truest in even light.
- Open blinds and curtains if you can, so windows are seen as windows.
- Turn all the way around. If too little of the room was seen, the app asks you to try again.
3. Correcting the scan
Scans are close, not perfect. Everything they measure can be corrected by hand, in the Plan view.
A wall's length or height
Tap the length shown beside a wall. Type the length and height you measured. The wall's start stays where it is, and the wall across from it adjusts so the room stays closed. Change the height for a wall that is lower than the ceiling, as under a slope.
The ceiling height
Tap Ceiling in the measurements along the bottom. It applies to the whole room.
A door, window or opening
Tap it in the plan. You can change:
- Type: door, window, or opening (a doorway with no door). A window with its blinds closed is sometimes scanned as a door; switch it here.
- Size and position: width, height, height above the floor, and distance from the left corner. Center on wall centers it on its wall, or in its alcove.
- Swing, for a door: which side the hinges are on and whether it opens into or out of the room. Left and right are as you see them standing in the room, facing the door.
- Double doors: a scan can miss a closed door beside an open one. Add a second door on the left or right to double the width on that side, or make it a single door again.
Use Delete in the same sheet to remove one that isn't there.
A door or window the scan missed
Tap a bare stretch of wall in the plan and choose Add a window here or Add a door here. It is sized like the nearest one in the room; tap it afterward to adjust it. The same menu has Wall color and Edit wall length and height.
What the app corrects on its own
- A window partly hidden by furniture or blinds is completed from a matching window nearby.
- Matching windows side by side are lined up at the same sill and top height.
- Something reported as a door that starts well above the floor is treated as a window.
4. Wall colors and floors
Tap the paintbrush, or tap the floor in the plan, to open Finishes:
- Walls: one color for all walls. To color a single wall, tap it in the plan and choose Wall color.
- Trim: whether there is a baseboard, its height and its color.
- Floor: the material (hardwood, laminate, carpet, tile, stone, concrete or vinyl) and color. The material is a guess from the floor's color, so check that it is right.
Rooms scanned before color estimation was added stay gray until they are scanned again; set their colors here.
5. 3D and plan views
Switch between them at the top of a space. The app remembers which you used last.
- 3D: drag to turn the room, pinch to zoom in or out. Items appear at their true size: those with a photo show it on the front of a see-through box the item's size; those without one show as a simple shape for their kind, such as a bed with a headboard or a table on legs.
- Plan: the room from above, with every wall's length. Pinch to zoom, drag to move around, and double-tap to fit the whole room again. Doors show their swing. Each item shows its outline, with its front edge drawn heavier, and a small lock if it is kept in place.
6. Measurements
Along the bottom of a space:
- Floor area.
- Ceiling height. Tap it to change it.
- Volume: floor area times ceiling height. Under a sloped ceiling it is shown as "≤", an upper limit, since the room is not full height everywhere.
- Perimeter: the length of all walls together.
Units follow your device's region: feet and inches in the United States, meters elsewhere. When typing inches, fractions work, such as 10 1/2.
7. Adding your things
Tap + in a space and choose:
- Take a photo: photograph the item. A straight-on view of its front works best, since the photo stands on the item's front.
- Choose from Photos: pick a photo you already have. The app sees only the photo you choose.
- From a product link: paste a link to a store's product page. See adding from a product link.
- Copy from another space: pick a space, tick one or more of its items, and tap Copy.
The app removes the photo's background, then asks for the item's exact size. If part of the item was cut away with the background, turn off Remove background to use the whole photo instead.
A new item is placed in the best open spot for its kind, such as a bed against the longest clear wall or a desk under a window. Drag it wherever you like.
Items belong to one room
Each item belongs to the space you add it to. To try the same sofa in another room, copy it there. The copy is separate: changing or removing one leaves the other as it was.
8. Adding from a product link
- On the store's product page, copy the link (in Safari, tap Share, then Copy).
- In Placed Space, tap +, then From a product link, then Paste, and tap Get details.
- The app reads the page: the product's name, its photos and the sizes it lists.
- Choose a photo. All the page's photos are shown, the product's own first. A straight-on view of the front on a plain background is picked for you when the page has one, since it cuts out cleanly. Tap any other to use it instead.
- Tap Continue, then choose the size.
Picking the right size
Store pages often list more than one set of measurements: the product itself, the box it ships in, and parts such as the seat or the inside of a drawer. The app lists every set it found, with the page's own words beside each, and labels the ones that look like the Shipping box or Part of the product. The product's overall size is filled in for you; tap another set to use it, or type the size yourself. If you pick the shipping box by mistake, the size check shows it standing taller than a person.
3D models from the store
When a store's page offers a 3D model of the product, the app downloads it and shows it in the room, stretched to the exact size you enter.
If nothing is found
Some pages show a cookie notice or a browser check first. Tap Show the page, close the notice, and tap Read this page. Sizes shown only in pictures, or in sections that open when tapped, can't be read; type them in instead.
Reading a product page is an ordinary visit to the store's website from your device. See Privacy.
9. Exact size and the size check
An item's typed size decides where it fits, so it is asked for first and is required:
- Width: side to side, as seen from the front.
- Depth: front to back.
- Height: floor to top.
Above the fields, the size check draws the item at its true size beside a person 5 ft 9 in tall, standing on the same floor. A sofa typed in feet instead of inches towers over the person, which is the point: a mistyped size stands out before it reaches the room.
Give the item a name and choose its kind (sofa, chair, table, desk, bed, dresser or cabinet, shelves, rug, lamp, art or mirror, television, or other). The kind decides where the app suggests putting it and the shape it is drawn as in 3D.
10. Changing or removing an item
Tap an item in the plan to change its size, name or kind. In the same sheet:
- Turn left and Turn right turn it a quarter turn, as seen from above, when you tap Done.
- Keep in place when arranging locks it, so automatic arranging leaves it where it is.
- Delete removes it from this space.
11. Placing items
In the Plan view, drag an item. While you drag, small markers show every spot it fits, with an arrow for the way it would face: against a wall with its back to it, in a corner, centered under a window, or in the middle of the room. Bring it near one and it snaps there, outlined, facing into the room. Let go and it stays.
None of the marked spots blocks a door's swing or a doorway, and tall pieces are never offered a spot in front of a window. You can still drop an item anywhere, since you may be testing a tight fit on purpose; if it overlaps something, sits outside the walls, blocks a door or covers a window, its outline turns red.
Rugs lie under furniture, so a bed or a table can stand on one.
12. Arranging automatically
Tap Arrange at the bottom of a space and choose a goal:
- Make it fit: everything in, with the most open floor.
- Simplicity: pieces against walls, clear paths, a calm balance.
- Minimalist: as much open floor as possible.
- Home staging: groupings for conversation and a clear view in from the door.
Three different options appear as small plans, and are worked out again whenever you change the goal or a lock. Tap one, then Use. A bar then offers Undo to go back, or Save… to keep it as a layout.
What every option respects
- Every door and doorway stays reachable from every other through a walkway at least 30 inches wide.
- Nothing blocks a door's swing, and nothing taller than a window's sill stands in front of it.
- Related pieces go together: nightstands either side of the bed, a desk chair pulled up to the desk, a coffee table in front of the sofa, a rug under the bed or in front of the sofa, a lamp beside seating, and a television on the wall the sofa faces.
If something can't fit without breaking a rule, the option names it rather than squeezing it in.
Keeping things where they are
Under Keep in place, lock anything that has to stay, such as a piano or a built-in desk. Everything else is arranged around it. Locks set here are kept when you tap Use; they can also be set in an item's sheet.
Arranging runs on your device. It needs no connection, and the same room and goal always give the same options.
13. Saving layouts
A layout remembers where everything in a space stands, so you can try ideas and come back.
- Tap Layouts, then Save this layout…, and name it.
- To go back to one, tap Layouts, choose it, and tap Open. Undo returns things to where they were just before.
- From the same menu, Rename… or Delete a layout.
Items added after a layout was saved stay where they are when you open it.
15. Your data
Your spaces, scans, item photos and layouts are stored on your device. Scanning, color estimation, background removal and arranging all happen on the device. Nothing is sent anywhere, except that adding from a product link visits that store's website. The Privacy Policy has the details.
Deleting a space deletes its items and layouts with it.
16. Troubleshooting
"Scan a room" is turned off
This device has no LiDAR Scanner. Scanning needs an iPhone or iPad Pro model that has one.
The scan didn't work, or not enough of the room was seen
Try again, turning all the way around so every wall is in view, in good light. In a large room, walk a few steps as well.
A wall's length is off
Measure it with a tape and type the length in: tap the wall's length in the plan. See correcting the scan.
A window shows as a door, or one is missing
Tap it and change its Type, or tap the bare wall to add the missing one.
Part of an item was cut away
When adding it, turn off Remove background, or choose a photo with a plainer background.
A product link found no photos or sizes
Tap Show the page, close any notice, and tap Read this page. If sizes still don't appear, type them in from the page.
An item won't snap anywhere
No marked spot is free for it: every wall spot would overlap something, block a door or cover a window. Move or remove something else, or drop it where you like; a red outline shows what is in the way.
Arrange says no arrangement keeps every rule
With what is locked, there isn't room for the rest while keeping the walkway clear. Unlock something, or remove an item and try again.
